Things to know before buying a CD Burner or CD Recorder

NOTE: As of late, the technology for DVD playing/burning has increased the production of hardware equipment that can play and record DVDs as well as CD-ROMs.

Burner Speed: The speed at which a recorder can record and read. The numbers in or after the model name refer to the read and write speeds. There are other factors that the numbers represent, such as buffer size and CD media speed. The buffer makes a big difference as it really improves burning times. Current top speeds are around 52x32x52, which means 52X CD-R burn, 32X CD-RW burn, 52X read.

Depending on the manufacturer, the order of speed ratings might be list in different orders. Most often write/rewrite/read. Also, a drive that supports DVDs will be written as write/rewrite/read/dvd-read, but there is no standard approach so just make sure you know what your buying.

Also, you may find some burners or drives that are repackaged versions of other manufacturer's devices. They might add other firmware or have other little changes or even add different software. Again, just make sure you are comparing apples to apples, if you comparing prices.

In general, there isn't the "perfect" CD or DVD recorder, but some drives are better than others. Here are some common and high rated manufacturers: Plextor, Sony, and Yamaha.

CD Recording Software: There are as many different CD buring software packages out there, as there are burners. However, some software packages are much better than others. In general, most all do the same thing, but the user-friendliness of some are better. Also, depending if you are an expert and need specific technical control over certain aspects of recording a CD, you will need certain packages. The novice will not need to mess up with configuring these specific settings, because the default settings will be fine for most users.

Review:

I'm thinking of buying a cd burner, but I dont know which brand. Here are 4 possibilities:
Sony
Asus
LG
Samsung

I've head bad things about the samsung and sony so that rules them out, so which one now?
---------------

I would probably buy the LG, I've heard very good thing about them. I have a samsung and it is VERY loud, and has long spin down times, and sometimes rattles my pc. It was only 40 bucks so i can't complain, but I'd get the LG if buing a new one.

--------------

Can't make an informed purchase or recommendation without knowing which models your considering. But heres a quick run down of known issues.

Asus....Noisey
LG....... Little quieter

Asus
LG.......Both (Depending on Model) have a reduced buffer size. 2MB..

Asus
LG...... Both control the price of there units..which means they will always be close to the others price list.

Asus...Tends to burn a little quicker
LG....... Burns slower...but is only off by 10-30seconds

---------------------

I have not owned a Plextor DVD Writer...but I have had 2 of there CDRW's. IMO...you really can't go wrong with these drives and manufacture. They are Fast, reliable, cutting edge technology, stable drivers, updated firmware versions. There only downside to me was the software package. There PlexBurn software was crap... They now ship with NERO..which was a big boost.

---------------------

Plextor CD-Burners sell for $150 CAD and DVD-Burners for $320 CAD. From all the reviews that I have read and according to the retailers and resellers opinions that I listened to, "NO ONE BEATS PLEXTOR IN QUALITY".
