DVD RW or DVD-RW DrivesWhat is a DVD-R or DVD-RW drive? DVD-R was the original recordable DVD format. It supports recording but not rewriting. DVD-R is supported by more than 90% of all DVD devices. DVD-RW is also a recordable DVD format, however it is also rewriteable or allowed to burn copies Blank DVD-RW and DVD-R disc formats can record up to 4.37 GB on a single sided DVD and 8.75 on a double sided DVD. The maximum writing speed of DVD-R recorders is 4x (5,540 KB/s). DVD-RW are written to at 2x (2,770 KB/s). This storage medium is great for storing movies. DVD-R is generally the least expensive media on the market today and it can be purchased for as little at $0.30 to $0.40 per DVD. Commercial movies are typically recorded on a dual layered DVD which stores up to 9.4GB, while DVD-R and DVD-RW only store 4.37 GB. There is however software that will shrink movies to fit on a single DVD-R and DVD-RM disk, one such software is DBD Shrink. DVD Shrink will remove content or reduce the quality of the movie to allow it to fit on a single 4.37 GB DVD. DVD-R and DVD-RW is also used to back up or burning data on your system. Since the DVD format will store more than 4GB of data and is readable by most all DVD players it is an excellent choice for backing up, copying critical data. Most newer backup software support a DVD Writer (DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW) as a backup device. It is recommended that you stick with the rewritable media (DVD-RW and DVD+RW) to allow you to run multiple backup sessions to a single DVD Disk. DVD+R/+RW was originally designed to be compatible with existing DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video players, on both the physical and the logical level. What this means is that your DVD+R/+RW disks will stand a higher probability of being compatible with your most any DVD-Video players or DVD-ROM equipped PCs, and that any DVD+R or DVD+RW disc recorded with data on a PC DVD+R/+RW drive can be read by most DVD-ROM burners / drives. What about Double sided DVDs?Double-sided DVDs are just that, DVDs that allow recording on both sides. The one main issue with the double-sided DVDs is their cost; they are typically more than the cost of 2 single-sided DVDs. This one issue has really killed to acceptance of double-sided DVD in place of multiple single-sided DVDs. Also, double sided DVDs require more care since both sides are recordable and must be treated with extra care. Toshiba Notebooks: While cutting and pasting file folders from Toshiba notebook with Windows XP and Sonic DLA to DVD RW there was problem and notebook had to be shut down resulting in DLA malfunctioning. Now DVD drive does not recognize whether DVD RW drive or CD Rom drive and gives error message that Y: is not accessible incorrect function. How to retrieve fles from the DVD RW?
